Learning From Parkland - NAIS Annual Conference, 2019

Lorena Sanabria & Chris Joffe - Learning From Parkland's Shooting

What’s most important to preventing active shooters and other school based violence?

Connection.

How do you build safety?

Confidence.

What’s the first step to recovery after an incident occurs?

Hope.

I’ve had the opportunity to hear Lorena’s story several times, now. Each time I listen to her share the experience of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas’ active shooter event from Valentines Day 2018, I learn something different - something more. The first time I heard her, I heard this powerful and inspirational young woman describe an incident through a lens we’d always wanted to explore; the student’s perspective.

In listening to her, we built nuances into our trainings around lockdown and active shooter and deeply examined how we could improve the experience of a student during a lockdown event. This year, at the National Association of Independent Schools’ Annual Conference, I got to share that story side by side with her and cause school leaders from around the country to explore this imperative perspective.
